The INM research group Structure Formation is seeking a motivated Doctoral Researcher with knowledge in magnetic materials and measurements who is interested in the development of magnetically controlled Engineered Living Materials (ELMs) for biomedical applications. This PhD project is part of a collaborative initiative combining synthetic biology, nanomaterials, and biomedical engineering, with the aim to develop remotely controllable bio-hybrid implants for targeted drug delivery in the bladder. The project builds on recent advances in thermo-responsive genetic switches and magnetic nanoparticle composites for localized therapy. The position offers hands-on experience in advanced material design, bacterial engineering, thermal actuation, and translational research in collaboration with clinical and industrial partners.
DOCTORAL RESEARCHER POSITION ON MAGNETICALLY CONTROLLED LIVING THERAPEUTIC MATERIALS (F/M/D)
Your Tasks
- Synthesize and characterize superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic nanoparticles suitable for biomedical use.
- Modify nanoparticle surfaces for compatibility with hydrogels and biological components.
- Optimize magnetothermal properties of nanoparticle formulations for heating in alternating magnetic fields.
- Create a magnetic heating setup to assess the performance of your materials.
- Integrate particles into composite materials for remote-controlled thermal actuation.
- Collaborate with partners for composite fabrication, in vitro testing, and translational aspects.
- Publish scientific papers and present results at international meetings.
Your Profile
We are looking for a motivated candidate with a Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, physics, nanotechnology, or a related field. Experience in colloidal synthesis, surface modification, or magnetic materials is an advantage. You should be interested in interdisciplinary work at the interface of materials science and biomedical applications. Proficiency in English is required; German is helpful but not essential.
What we offer
- E13 TV-L 60% contract with the possibility of salary increment based on performance.
- A dynamic, interdisciplinary, and international research environment with excellent, state-of-the-art infrastructure.
- A cooperative, friendly and supportive environment, with plenty of opportunities to interact with other researchers.
- Opportunities for scientific training, conference participation, and career development.
